Sapele Mourns As Three-Year-Old Boy Dies In Suspected Ritual Killing

Residents of Sapele, Delta State, have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a three-year-old boy, Master Lemuel, whose lifeless body was discovered a day after he was reported missing.

The incident, which occurred in the Uko Road area of Sapele, has sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for increased vigilance and closer supervision of children within communities.

According to information gathered from family members, the child was playing with other children in the neighbourhood on Monday, August 10, 2026, before he was reportedly sent to buy an item for his father.

Sources said the child, who was said to be unwell at the time, failed to return home several hours later, prompting his parents and neighbours to begin a search.

When all efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful, his father reportedly lodged a complaint at the Gana Police Station.

The search, however, ended in tragedy the following morning when the child’s lifeless body was discovered near the family residence.

According to reports, the child’s father told sympathisers who visited the family that the victim had sustained multiple injuries believed to have been inflicted with a sharp object.

The tragic development sent shockwaves through the community, especially following reports that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

There were also allegations that items believed to belong to other children were discovered in a vacant room within the compound where the suspect resided.

Unconfirmed reports further alleged that investigators recovered bloodstained materials and other suspicious items from the premises.

However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death remain under police investigation.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents and renewed discussions about child safety and security within the community.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Hon. Bright Abeke, represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Raymond Overah, led a delegation of council officials on a condolence visit to the bereaved family.

Speaking on behalf of the council chairman, Hon. Overah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and assured the family that the council was committed to ensuring that the matter was thoroughly investigated.

He disclosed that the council chairman had directed the relevant security agencies to intensify investigations, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities within their communities to the appropriate security agencies.

The tragic death of the three-year-old has once again highlighted the importance of parental supervision and community vigilance in protecting children.

Parents and guardians have been encouraged not to assume that children are safe simply because they are playing within familiar surroundings, while residents have also been urged to pay closer attention to unusual activities within their neighbourhoods.

As investigations continue, residents of Sapele have called on security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and ensure that justice is served.

For the grieving family, however, no amount of punishment can erase the pain of losing a child under such heartbreaking circumstances.

The community continues to mourn little Lemuel while hoping that the ongoing investigation will provide answers, ensure accountability and prevent a similar tragedy from occurring again.
