TUC Delta Calls For Probe Into Death Of Education Ministry Deputy Director

he Delta State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an Assistant Director in the Delta State Ministry of Education.

The union, in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, said it received the news of the public servant’s death with “profound sadness,” amid reports of an alleged incident involving a serving Commissioner in the state.

The TUC expressed condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, colleagues, friends and associates, praying that God would grant them the strength to bear the loss.

The union said the protection of the dignity, safety, welfare and fundamental rights of workers remained one of its core responsibilities, adding that it was concerned about the circumstances surrounding the incident and reports of an alleged physical altercation preceding the death.

However, the TUC urged all parties to exercise restraint and allow the relevant authorities to establish the facts.

It appealed to its members and the general public to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding and to refrain from violence, confrontation or the circulation of unverified information.

The union said it would engage with the appropriate authorities and relevant stakeholders to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the TUC, the investigation should, where relevant, consider events leading up to the incident, witness accounts, medical and other relevant records, documentary evidence and any other material that could assist in establishing the facts.

It also urged persons connected with the matter to refrain from statements or actions capable of prejudicing the investigative process, interfering with witnesses or unnecessarily heightening tensions.

The union stressed that allegations should be properly investigated and that anyone found culpable should be dealt with in accordance with due process and applicable law.

The TUC Delta State Council assured workers in the Ministry of Education and the deceased’s colleagues that it was closely monitoring developments and would pursue lawful and legitimate avenues to ensure that the concerns of its members were properly represented.

The union said its call for calm should not be misconstrued as indifference, stressing that the death of a worker under circumstances that had raised concerns deserved appropriate attention from the relevant authorities.

It called on the Delta State Government and all relevant authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserved and ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death were thoroughly and credibly investigated, with appropriate action taken based on the findings of competent authorities.

The TUC Delta State Council said it mourned with the family of the deceased, stood with its members and remained committed to pursuing justice and accountability through lawful and legitimate means.
