Independence Day Football Competition: Ogodo Community Hosts 2026 Unity Cup, Keeps Aghogho Omomaife’s Legacy Alive
The Ogodo Community in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, on Thursday, October 1, hosted the 2026 Independence Day Unity Cup, a football competition that brought residents together in celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary and in remembrance of the legacy of the late Senator Aghogho Omomaife.
The annual competition has grown beyond a football match to become a community tradition promoting unity, friendship, sportsmanship and togetherness among the people of Ogodo.
The 2026 edition featured the familiar rivalry between Urban and Peace Land, two parts of the community separated geographically by the old Sapele–Agbor Road but united by their shared heritage.
Urban stretches from the Eku–Abraka axis towards the Ethiope River, while Peace Land extends towards the new Sapele–Agbor Express Road.
Despite the friendly rivalry on the football field, the competition continues to provide an opportunity for both sides to come together as one community and celebrate their shared identity.
Urban once again emerged victorious in this year’s encounter, extending its remarkable winning run to six consecutive years.
The victory earned the Urban team another Independence Day Cup and further strengthened its dominance in the annual competition.
Evang. Christian Omomaife, in a message on behalf of the Aghogho Omomaife Education and Charity Foundation, described the occasion as an emotional reminder of the legacy left behind by his late brother, Senator Aghogho Omomaife, and his team.

According to him, the competition represents the values his late brother stood for, particularly community development, unity, youth empowerment and creating opportunities for people to thrive.
He said the significance of the competition went beyond the trophy and bragging rights, stressing that its greatest value was its ability to bring people together.
Omomaife said the Aghogho Omomaife Education and Charity Foundation was established to preserve and continue those values by supporting the community, empowering young people and creating opportunities for future generations.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s Independence Day, he said true independence should also involve building communities where young people could dream, compete, connect, contribute and believe in themselves.
He expressed hope that the Ogodo Community Independence Day Cup would continue for many generations and that the rivalry between Urban and Peace Land would remain a source of unity rather than division.
He also called for the memory and legacy of Senator Aghogho Omomaife to continue inspiring efforts to build a stronger community that future generations would be proud to inherit.
Omomaife commended the players, organisers, supporters and all those who had contributed to keeping the annual tradition alive.
“Six years for Urban. One community for us all. One beautiful legacy that lives on,” he said.
