Why I Barred Traffic Management Officials From Abraka— Faith Majemite By John Tega

Ethiope East Local Government Area Chairman, Chief (Mrs.) Faith Majemite has revealed the reason why she banned traffic management officials from operating in Abraka, saying that the local government did not at any time financially benefit from the scheme in the area.

The Local Government Chairman during a phone conversation with Oasis Magazine (OM) said that the ban was hinged on the findings by the council that those ladened with fighting traffic offences in the community became too unruly, adding that no one sent them to be collecting huge sums of money from offenders.

She added: “We will soon set up another traffic committee after we meet with the traditional rulers in the areas and stakeholders; there are bye-laws that back the activities of traffic officials in the area.”

This disclosure came on the heels of the arrest of members of the traffic management committee in Abraka after they embarrassed some X Squad members of the police from Asaba, who they tried to extort monies from for traffic offences, unknowing to them that they were security operatives.

Four members of the said group were arrested and taken to the Delta State Police Command in Asaba and were only let off the hook after several calls for their release and a promise to ban their activities in the area.
The traffic management officials have since deserted the road, as few of them still try to trick gullible individuals who are not aware of this development.
A complainant who spoke to OM described their activities as an arrangement to extort money and not prevent motorists from involving in traffic offences, saying that Twenty Thousand Naira was collected from his friend, a lecturer with

Delta State University, Abraka for wrong parking.
According to this source, the highest traffic law offence in Edo State which has to do with driving against traffic attracts a fine of Five Thousand Naira.
He added: “There you see them well organized, as many of them are graduates, unlike what obtains here where they smoke cigarettes publicly as they go about their duties and harass you.”
