The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, CP Zanna Ibrahim has successfully flagged off the Ughelli Area Command Community Policing project.
Represented by the Command’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Ngozi Onajekon at the occasion on Wednesday in Ughelli, Ibrahim said that the move is geared towards involving “all stakeholders and the citizenry in managing our security.”
According to him, “emerging global crime-trend demands the adoption of effective and dynamic machinery of preventing and where necessary, detecting crimes.”
He said: “The Nigeria Police Force, being the lead internal security agency, in line with internal security agency and international best practices, have leveraged on the security architectural posture of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Idris Kpotun Ibrahim, who officially and publicly launched the Community Policing Re-engagement Guideline and Community Policing Logo at the International Conference Center, Abuja, on 5th September, 2017.”
This, Zanna said will “introduce a paradigm shift from society’s conventional and orthodox pattern of policing; and to leverage on the Community Policing Project in the fight against criminality.”
Continuing, the Delta State Police boss said the Command “sees the project as a most proactive method of tackling the menace of crime in our society,” saying “community policing is a call on all-and-sundry to synergize with the Nigeria Police Force and other sister security agencies, to collectively check-mate the activities of criminals.”
Furthermore, he opined that “the gap between the police and the society has not only provided criminals the opportunity to unleash mayhem against the peace, security and well-being of law abiding citizens, but has provided criminals the opportunity of recruiting unsuspecting innocent unemployed youths into their nefarious profession.”
Zanna, while noting that “Ughelli Area Command has recorded appreciable success in the fight against crime,” commended them for pioneering the maiden launch of the project.
Earlier on, during his welcome address, ACP Adepoju Ilori, Area Commander, Ughelli said that the rate of crime under him has drastically reduced due to the support of the Divisional Police Officers in the area, saying that “incidents of kidnapping, cultism, homicide, rape, defilement and armed robbery have dropped to a very low frequency.”
He continued: “Cases of communal crises, youth restiveness emanating from oil politics have been on check,” adding that the cooperation of traditional institutions, communities and youth leaders have assisted immensely in achieving the level of success obtained.
Ilori added: “The verve in the Police Community Relations Community (PCRC) in the Area Command is a clear testimony of the good relationship existing between the people and the police,” adding that “the needed basic structure to drive the project is already in place.”
Speaking further, the Area Commander stressed that “the Commissioner of Police has shown his dynamism in the management of this Project in Delta State evidenced in the deployment of all the new Police Constables posted to the Command” by deploying them to their local government areas of origin.
Present at the ceremony were: Prince Freeborn Oharisi, representing the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III; Okakuro (Dr.) Tedwins Emudainohwo; President-General, Oruarivie-Abraka Kingfom, the 16 Divisional Police Officers in the Area Command; PCRC executive members in the area, vigilante members from the command, among others.
