NDLEA Raid: Police Begin Investigation Into Death Of Two-Year-Old Child Hit By Stray Bullets In Asaba

The Delta State Police Command has began investigation into the death of a two-year-old child that was hit by a start bullet during a raid by men of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Oasis Magazine reported earlier that a sibling to the deceased was also wounded during the incidence.

The incidence took place at Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the incident occurred when the NDLEA operatives raided a notorious drug joint in the area on Thursday.

Sources said the deceased child, Ivan Omhonria and his younger sibling, Eromonsele, had just returned from school to their mother’s shop when they were hit by stray bullets.

The source said Ivan was hit on his abdomen while the bullet brushed Eromonsele on the eye.

He said the victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba for treatment, adding that Ivan could not survive it.

The ugly incident occured between 2:00pm and 3:00pm after the children were picked from school by their father, Mr. Omorhiakogbe Fidelis, and kept in their mother’s shop.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Bright Edafe, added that “the command is aware of the incident that occured on the 13th of July 2023,” saying “it is a sad one and a tragic incident and that the Command is disturbed about the incident.”

Continuing, the police Spokesman said: “Unfortunately one of the kids who the stray bullet hit gave up the ghort at the hospital. He is aged 2 years and his name is Ivan Omhonria.”

“The CP has directed that the matter be transferred to the State CID. As I speak to you, the matter is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Delta State Police Command and all parties involved will appear before the CP on Monday,” the police said.
