U.S. Charges Iran In Alleged Plot To Assassinate President-elect, Trump
The U.S. Justice Department has announced charges against Iran, accusing the nation of orchestrating a plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump.
FBI Director, Christopher Wray highlighted the charges as evidence of Iran’s “continued, brazen attempts to target U.S. citizens, including President-elect Donald Trump.”

An FBI investigation uncovered statements from a 51-year-old Iranian man with Afghan citizenship, who claimed he had been directed by Iran to formulate and execute an assassination plan against Trump shortly before the recent U.S. presidential election. Investigators reportedly found these statements credible.
Last month, Trump’s campaign team confirmed that the U.S. Secret Service had informed them of credible threats from Iran to his life. Alongside this case, U.S. authorities have issued arrest warrants for the Iranian man and two other individuals implicated in a related plot to assassinate an Iranian dissident.
Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the alleged assassination plot, warning that “few actors pose as severe a threat to U.S. national security as Iran.” He vowed that the U.S. would not tolerate actions by the Iranian regime that threaten American citizens and national security.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated during Trump’s first term when he withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran, imposed new sanctions, and designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. In 2020, Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, further straining relations.
