Education Minister Queries FUTO VC Over Appointment Of 24 Aides, Orders Reversal

The Federal Ministry of Education has directed the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), to reverse the appointment of 24 aides made within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, describing the action as inconsistent with established regulations and due process.

In a letter dated June 25, 2026, and signed by the Acting Director of University Education, Dr. Kareem O.L., on behalf of the Honourable Minister of Education, the Ministry said the appointments had come to its attention through a memorandum forwarded by the Vice-Chancellor.

According to the Ministry, a careful review of the memorandum and the circumstances surrounding the appointments revealed that the action was at variance with extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.

Consequently, the Minister directed that the appointments be reversed immediately and that evidence of compliance be forwarded to the Ministry without delay.

The Ministry also invited the Vice-Chancellor to appear before it on Monday, June 29, 2026, for discussions on issues relating to institutional governance, administrative accountability, due process, and strict adherence to the regulatory framework guiding the administration of federal universities in Nigeria.

The letter stressed the importance of maintaining best practices in the management of tertiary institutions and expressed confidence that the matter would receive the Vice-Chancellor’s prompt attention and cooperation.

A copy of the correspondence was also sent to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
