Flooding, Gridlock Hit Agbarho Expressway As CDHR Urges Oborevwori To Act Swiftly

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Delta State, has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to act swiftly to address the flooding and near collapse of the Agbarho Expressway linking Agbarho to Ughelli via the East-West Road.

The group made the call in a statement on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, drawing the urgent attention of the Delta State Government to the worsening condition of the road.

According to the statement signed by Comr. Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, State Chairman, and Comr. Nosa Overseey, State Publicity Secretary, CDHR Delta State, the group attributed the situation to heavy rainfall, poor drainage and what it described as unregulated dredging activities within the area, saying the flooding had severely affected the expressway and resulted in serious traffic congestion and gridlock.

It said motorists, commuters and haulage trucks were being stranded for hours, with the situation affecting lives, businesses and the movement of goods along the route.

Continuing, the group noted that the East-West Road is a major federal artery connecting Delta State to Bayelsa, Rivers and other South-South states, as well as an important route to the state capital, Asaba, through Ughelli North Local Government Area.

CDHR called on the Delta State Government to, as a matter of urgency, facilitate an alternative route for motorists and pedestrians using the affected road to ease access to other areas and connecting regions.

It also urged the government to deploy emergency response teams to manage traffic and prevent accidents, while commencing palliative works on the affected sections pending full rehabilitation by the Federal Government.

The organisation further called on the state government to engage the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Federal Ministry of Works for urgent intervention.

“We cannot wait for the road to completely cut off before we act. Delta’s economy and movement depend on this road,” the group said.

CDHR described the situation on the Agbarho-Ughelli axis as unbearable, noting that goods were also trapped alongside commuters.

It stressed that an alternative route was “not a luxury” but a necessity, and called for immediate action to prevent further deterioration of the road and worsening disruption to movement.
