Delta Police Charges 3 Udu Vigilante Members To Court Over Involvement In Securing Election Materials
By Daniel Dafe
The Delta State Police Command has charged three suspects, Uvwiejitobor Akpevwe, Alfred Joseph and David Ukiri, all from Udu Local Government Area of the state to court over their involvement in securing electoral materials meant for the Saturday 23rd, February, 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The three suspects claimed to be vigilante members detailed by their Local Government Chairman to escort electoral materials after sorting and sharing to the said council area.
The suspects were yesterday arraigned at a Chief Magistrate Court in Asaba.
According to the police, this will serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
In a press release signed by ASP Chuks Oresewezie, Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Asaba, the police said that “this move will inform members of the public that the sole responsibility of securing INEC materials, INEC offices/officials, polling units, collation centers and racks rest squarely on the police in collaboration with other approved security agencies.”
The statement continued: “The Police authority will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any offender according to the law,” saying that vigilantes and private security guards volunteer organizations should steer clear of the 2019 election security.
The command assured members of the public of its commitment to the security and safety of deltans.
