Fulani Herdsmen Attack Cultists In Delta Community

No fewer than ten persons belonging to a popular cult group in Abraka, were recently killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen who thought the cultists had come to attack them.

This reporter learnt that the cultists, numbering over 100 were said to have converged at Ovre’ Abraka around 3: 30 am for an initiation ceremony for new intakes into the cult when the herdsmen opened fire on them.
It was learnt that the herdsmen thought the cultists had come to attack them before opening fire on them.
Further investigation revealed that the cultists scampered for safety after the gun shots, leading to the death of suspected cultists while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
A top community source at Urhuoka community, who craved anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying that it was unfortunate that the young men died in such circumstances.
He said : “It was about 3:30 am at night when we heard repeated gunshots inside the bush and in the morning we wanted to go there but declined for fear of being attacked because Fulani herdsmen resided in the area.
“However, on Monday morning we went there and observed that over 10 persons were lying dead with bullet wounds inside the bush.”
Another source hinted: “My friends and I saw many cars driving in a convoy on Sunday evening so we tailed them to Ekpo River Road where they stopped and parked their cars. They were over a 100 persons dressed in black shirts and trousers with various symbols that depicted they were cultists with a small coffin. In fact, we learnt that they came for initiation ceremony.
“After sometime, they moved from there and we tailed them to Benin Old Road after Marcarty Beach, where they parked their cars and went inside the bush. We went closer and observed they had made fire and were dancing amidst jubilation songs before we left.”
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Andrew Aniamaka, said such information is not at his disposal.
