Abraka Market Women To Protest Eghweya’s High-Handedness, Declare Sit-At-Home

The market women in Abraka, Delta State, are planning a protest against the Abraka Eghweya Association’s high-handedness and unfriendly laws, which they claim are causing them hardship.

The key issues include harassment and intimidation by the Eghweya group; excessive and unauthorized levies collected daily, above the government-prescribed rates; heavy fines imposed on defaulters; dictatorial governance style by the Eghweya group; and unilateral changes to market closing times (from 8:00 pm to 7:00 pm) without consulting the traders.

The market women have declared a sit-at-home boycott on Monday and Tuesday, refusing to trade on those days. They hope this action will bring attention to their plight and prompt changes to the Eghweya group’s policies.
