Warri Landlords Send SOS To Okowa Over Nuisance Of Abattoir

Concerned landlords and tenants at Delta Development and Property Authority (DDPA) Igbudu Estate, Warri have sent a Save Our Souls (SOS) to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over the nuisance of an abattoir located in the area.

A representative of the aggrieved landlords and tenants, Mr S O Ogbeifo who spoke to our correspondent on the issue at his school located opposite the abattoir, complained that the odorous smell of the abattoir was constituting nuisance to his school and to other landlords and tenants in the area.

The educationist cum lawyer who emphasized that the abattoir was not approved by government, lamented that parents had been withdrawing their wards from his school due to stench from the abattoir.

He also stated that most landlords and tenants had relocated from the area as a result of the nuisance caused by the abattoir and that one of such landlords he said, was a mother of serving magistrate.

Ogbeifo also complained that the unoccupied buildings which were vacated by landlords and tenants were used as hideouts by hoodlums, saying that it was not safe to go to the area in the evenings.

While noting that, taking cattle for slaughtering at the abattoir was a threat to his pupils, students, and staff as well as other residents of the area, he presented copies of letters of complaints written through his lawyers to Department of Environment, Warri South Local Government Area to no avail.

When the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Dr Michael Tidi was contacted through SMS on the issue, he replied, saying, “They should write to council please.”

Consequently, the Head of the Department of Environment, in the council, Mrs Stella Mode was contacted through the phone by our correspondent and she affirmed that the said abattoir was not approved by the council, stating that the only approved abattoir in the entire local government was the one in Pessu Market.

When confronted with the letters of complaints by the concerned landlords and tenants, she responded, “we are on it.”
