Malami: FG To Comply With Supreme Court Ruling Stopping Deadline For Old Naira Notes

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said the federal government will comply with the Supreme Court order restraining it and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), from implementing the February 10 deadline to stop the use of old N200, N500 and N1000 notes.

Recall that the apex court, on Wednesday, granted an ex parte motion filed by the governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara States, seeking “an interim Injunction restraining the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction.”

The court subsequently fixed February 15, for the Attorney-General of the Federation to show cause why the deadline should not be further extended before the next adjourned date.

Speaking Thursday night, in an interview with Arise News, Malami said the federal government will comply with the order of the apex court in demonstration of its commitment to the rule of law.

He, however, noted that his office had filed a preliminary objection to the suit instituted by the Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara State Governments.
