South Africa Deports 95 Libyans For Illegal Military Training In Mpumalanga

On Sunday, South Africa deported 95 Libyan nationals who were arrested in July at a suspected secret military training camp in Mpumalanga province. The Libyans had entered the country in April on study permits, ostensibly to train as security guards, but were apprehended during a police raid on the camp in White River, a popular holiday town in the northeastern province.

During the raid, police discovered military training equipment and drugs at the camp, leading to allegations that the Libyans were receiving illegal military training in violation of their visas and South African immigration laws. The Home Affairs Department subsequently canceled their visas, citing that they were obtained through misrepresentation in Tunisia.

The Libyans appeared in the White River magistrate’s court three times, but last week, the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew the charges against them. Following this, they were deported to Benghazi via Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber emphasized that his department will continue to utilize all available resources to enforce and uphold immigration laws in the country.
