NASU FUO Branch Opposes Outgoing VC’s Promotion Policy, Decries Poor Staff Welfare

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Federal University Otuoke (FUO) Branch, has strongly opposed the decision of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias, describing his recent promotion policy as unfair, insensitive, and discriminatory.

The union expressed displeasure over the directive which allegedly bars junior staff on Grade Level 5 and below from participating in the ongoing promotion exercise. The Vice-Chancellor is also reported to have stated that only nine junior staff members with Bachelor’s degrees and an “AA” grade classification would be promoted.

According to NASU, the decision violates the Federal Government’s public service promotion guidelines and the university’s conditions of service. The union insists that promotions should be based on performance, years of service, and merit — not on selective academic criteria set by the outgoing administration.

In a strongly worded statement, NASU condemned the development, saying that the university’s workforce is suffering under poor management policies, which have created hardship and low morale among staff.

> “Our members are suffering from years of neglect, unfair labour practices, and inconsistent policies that have crippled motivation. Many Bayelsans have been unjustly dismissed from work without due process, and we cannot continue to remain silent,” the statement read in part.

The union further criticised what it described as double standards in the administration’s handling of promotions, noting that academic staff were upgraded to professorial ranks only last month, while non-academic staff continue to be denied their rightful career advancement opportunities.
