DESOPADEC Commences Desilting Exercise In Ndokwa Nation

The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, on Monday 22nd June, 2026 continued its desilting and drainage clearance exercise in Kwale, focusing on major streets within Ndokwa West Local Government Area, including Apa Street and Alamaossai Street, as part of ongoing flood-control efforts in the area.

The operation, which is part of a wider environmental sanitation and flood-mitigation programme across oil-producing communities, was supervised by officials from the Department of Environment, Ndokwa West Local Government Council, who monitored compliance, progress, and community safety during the exercise.

According to field observations, teams of sanitation and environmental workers and some artisans were seen actively clearing blocked drainages, removing silt, weeds, and accumulated waste materials that had obstructed water flow in key drainage channels.

Residents in the affected streets expressed relief as machinery and manual crews worked simultaneously to reopen waterways ahead of peak rainfall periods.

Officials from the Environment Department noted that the intervention is aimed at reducing flooding risks, improving public health and restoring proper drainage flow across Kwale township. They also emphasized the importance of sustained community cooperation, especially in preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages after the exercise.

Community members around Apa and Alamaossai streets acknowledged that flooding had previously disrupted movement and damaged roadside structures during heavy rains but expressed optimism that the current desilting work would bring lasting improvement.

A representative of the supervising environmental team, Mr. Kingsley Iweka reaffirmed that DESOPADEC’s intervention in Ndokwa West is being carried out in phases, covering major roads, inner streets and known flood-prone areas, in alignment with broader state environmental management efforts.

The exercise is expected to continue in other parts of Kwale in the coming days as authorities intensify efforts to ensure a cleaner and more flood-resilient environment across Ndokwa West LGA.
