Oleh Campus: LAWSAN, DELSU Hold Annual Dinner, Honour Beauty Alloh, Ovoke Warri, Abuza

The Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), Delta State University (DELSU), Oleh Campus, held its 2026 Annual LAWSAN Dinner on Saturday, July 18, at St. Michael’s College Event Centre, Ogbomudia Expressway, Oleh, in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In her welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor (Mrs.) Beauty O. Alloh, welcomed guests and congratulated the 500-level law students on the successful completion of their final examinations.

She urged the graduating students to be worthy ambassadors of the faculty, emphasizing that they must remain bold, courageous and uphold the highest standards of professionalism as they begin their legal careers.

According to Professor Alloh, courage and confidence are indispensable qualities of every successful lawyer, encouraging the graduates to stand tall in the face of challenges.

Delivering the keynote lecture titled, “Freedom of Speech and National Security: Where is the Dividing Line?”, Professor A. C. E. Abuza, Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, DELSU Oleh Campus, explained that both international legal instruments and Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution guarantee citizens the right to freedom of expression and press freedom.

He, however, noted that such rights are not absolute and may be restricted whenever their exercise poses a threat to Nigeria’s national security. He cited several Supreme Court decisions to support his position.

Professor Abuza also lamented that Section 6(6)(c) of the 1999 Constitution renders Section 22—which empowers the media to hold government accountable—non-justiciable, making it impossible for journalists to seek legal protection under that provision when denied the opportunity to perform their constitutional role.

He thanked the Faculty of Law and LAWSAN for the privilege of delivering the lecture.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to distinguished personalities in recognition of their contributions to legal education, public service and student development.

Award recipients included the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor (Mrs.) Beauty Alloh; Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Council, Ovoke Warri; Professor A. C. E. Abuza; Dr. Peter Itsueli, Staff Adviser to LAWSAN; LAWSAN President, Imene Supreme; and Vice-President, Tessy Igben.

Professor Abuza received the “Beloved Lecturer of the Faculty of Law” award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to teaching, mentorship and academic excellence.

Among the dignitaries at the event were Ovoke Warri, Professor Beauty Alloh, Professor A. C. E. Abuza, Mr. Onanuga, Imene Supreme, Tessy Igben, members of the academic community, students and other invited guests.
