Professor Weigha Writes Open Letter To Abel Damina, Challenges ‘Jesus Is Not Better Than You’ Teaching

Professor Prince Ebitimi Weigha has written an open letter to Apostle Dr Abel Damina, urging the controversial preacher to reconsider his theological position on the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

Weigha, who described himself as a Professor of Biblical Exegesis and a member of the Association of Christian Theologians (ACTS), Thinking Hat, and Bible Research Institute (BRI), said his intervention was motivated by a desire for “unity and truth” within the Christian faith.

The professor’s letter, titled “Open Love Letter to Apostle Dr Abel Damina,” specifically challenged Damina over his reported public teaching that Jesus Christ is “not better than you” or any believer.

According to Weigha, although the New Testament teaches that believers are co-heirs with Christ and recipients of the Holy Spirit, such privileges do not place Christians on the same level as Christ.

He argued that Christ remains uniquely supreme as Creator, Redeemer and Lord, stressing that believers are branches while Christ is the Vine.

“While the New Testament affirms that believers are co-heirs with Christ and that His Spirit dwells within us, it never diminishes His unparalleled supremacy, preeminence, and divinity,” Weigha stated.

He further accused Damina’s interpretation of Scripture of relying on isolated biblical passages without sufficient attention to their historical, grammatical and literary contexts.

The professor distinguished between exegesis and eisegesis, arguing that equating a believer’s spiritual position in grace with Christ’s ontological status constitutes a serious hermeneutical error.

Citing Colossians 1:15-18, Weigha maintained that Christ has absolute preeminence over creation and the Church, pointing particularly to Paul’s declaration that “in all things he might have the preeminence.”

He also referenced Hebrews 1:3-4 and Philippians 2:9-11 to reinforce his argument that Jesus occupies a unique position above every created being.

Weigha further appealed to historic Christian doctrine, citing the Nicene Creed and Chalcedonian Definition as affirmations of Christ’s divinity and His identity as fully God and fully man.

According to him, lowering Christ to the level of humanity could echo theological errors associated with historical movements such as Arianism and Adoptionism.

The professor, however, said his letter was not intended as an attack on Damina but as a call to humility and theological reflection.

“Dr Damina, the grace message reveals mankind’s fallen state and God’s incredible unmerited favour. It was never meant to elevate human ego to the point of claiming equality with the Son of God,” he stated.

Weigha also urged Damina to reconsider his approach to biblical interpretation, saying the Christian community needs a message that promotes healing, stability and reverence for Christ rather than contentious theological debates.

“Let us return to a theology that humbles itself before Christ instead of vying for a throne beside Him. Humble yourself, Doctor, so that Christ alone may be magnified,” he said.

He concluded by urging Christians and other readers to share the letter so that it could reach Damina.
