Delta NUJ Holds First Rotational Congress, Calls For Speedy Pace Of Work On Warri, Effurun Flyover Projects, Others

The First Rotational Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Press Hall, Governor’s Office Annex, Warri, Delta State.

The Congress, presided over by the State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, hosted three Special Guests of Honour, which include the Chairman, Warri South Local Government, Hon. Isaac Weyinmi Agbateyiniro and the Director-General, DG, Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency (WUEDA), Prince Okakuro Godwin Ejinyere, who was represented by his Director of Media, Dr Godwin Orhadahwe.

The third guest, a veteran journalist and businessman, Asiwaju Sola Adebayo, was honoured by the Council for his outstanding performance and contributions to the growth of the Union.

Rising from the robust interactions with the guests, particularly on the issues rebounding on the models and efforts to restructure the entire area by the Warri South Council Chairman, and the DG of WUEDA, to rebrand and remodel the Oil City of Warri and its environs, a Communiqué signed by Comrade Churchill Oyowe Chairman NUJ, Delta State, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, Secretary NUJ Delta State and members of the Communique Drafting Committee, Comrade Ifeanyi Olannye – (Chairman, Asaba Correspondents Chapel), Comrade Ufuoma Omologe‎ –  DBS Warri Chapel, Secretary  and Comrade Yvonne Souwari – Interim Chairman, Fresh Angle Chapel, Member, was released.

The union in the said communiqué, while appreciating the Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori for the speedy pace of work on the three flyover projects in Warri and Effurun and the choice of Julius Berger for the contract, urged the government to sustain the release of funds to ensure timely completion of the projects.

The union also commended the Delta State Government’s approach, policies and programmes to addressing the needs of Deltans, while calling for massive investment in agriculture, in order to alleviate the plight of hunger in the land.

Meanwhile, Delta State Government was also asked to address the persistent security challenges in the state, occasioned by the rising spate of kidnapping, rape, and herders invasion of farms; ensure safety of lives and property, as well as guarantee food sufficiency and security in the state.

Furthermore, Delta NUJ expressed concern about the dilapidated road from Tuomor to Ojobo in Burutu Local Government Area of the state, and called for urgent attention by the government to ease the burden of residents living in the area, and of travellers along that route.

Delta NUJ also urged the state Government to revisit the failed Omadino/Ughoton Road for urgent rehabilitation work, as well as construct the link road from Omadinor/ Ughoton axis to Sapele.

Continuing, while commending government for hosting the National Youths Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, urged it to complete the Warri Township Stadium project without delay after the completion of the drainage projects in Warri.

Also, while charging the state Government to expedite action on, and ensure the timely implementation of the N70,000 Minimum Wage for workers in the state, the union appealed to the Governor, other elected officers in the state to engage the services of certified and registered members of the NUJ as media aides.

The NUJ Congress also called for urgent upgrade of the two government-owned Radio and TV stations in Asaba and Warri into model, high-rated digital broadcasting stations.
