Delta CP Delivers Keynote Address At Oasis Magazine Awards

…Says Operational Strategies To Tackle Insecurity Yielding Positive Result

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi has said that different operational strategies put forth by the Police Command in collaboration with the State Government in tackling insecurity in the state, are rapidly yielding positive result and ensuring that the lives and property of Deltans are secured and protected from any incursion or attack from criminals.

He said this on Thursday while delivering the Keynote Address at the Distinguished Nigerian Awards, DISNA, organized by Oasis Magazine in Asaba, the state capital.

According to him, “appropriate measures to sustain, increase and even introduce new more measures to squarely tackle the sources which breed and encourage insecurity in the state are welcomed in other to consolidate the progress so far achieved in tackling insecurity.”

Represented by ACP Alex Udeze, Area Commander, Asaba, the police boss, added: “The state is confronted with the challenges of land-grabbing, violent crimes such as Fulani herdsmen, armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom.”

He continued: “The activities of the outlaw members of IPOB, is gradually gaining ground in the State, as a result of the infiltration of its members into the state, from the neighboring Eastern States, thereby threatening the livelihood of the citizens in recent times, though had been neutralized by the Delta State Police Command.”

The CP said that the Government both at “the Federal and State are trying in no small measure since 1999, to bring insecurity especially in the past of the country to a halt, with the introduction of amnesty programme of late President Shehu Musa Yaadua administration, which reduced the alarming rate of militancy and other social vices in the Niger Delta State is inclusive.”

He opined that “more measures are needed to be put in place to adequately tackle insecurity in Delta State.”

Abaniwonda said that maximum/effective support for all security agencies, not only for combating the sources of insecurity and conflicts, but also for intelligence gathering was important, saying “the Nigeria Police Force, State Security Services, and other security forces, need adequate attention and assistance.”

Furthermore, Delta CP called for “assistance to community services to keep the peace and provide security in the form of vigilant networks as approved by Nigeria Police Force.”

Speaking further, he opined that the recognition of the roles of traditional institutions, particularly the Traditional Rulers of all communities, strengthening of community leaders in order to assist the police in identifying and flushing out elements of conflicts and insecurity in their areas of authorities, volunteering intelligence and useful information to the Police, establishment of a Delta State Stakeholders forum for regular discourses on peace and security in the entire state and creation of job opportunities and conducive environment to enable businesses to flourish, are other measures needed to be put in place to tackle insecurity in the area.
