Cult Wars Get Bloodier In Sapele, As Gunmen Kill Two

Pandemonium broke out in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday after two persons were shot as cultists continue in their supremacy battles in the timber town.

The identity of the deceased who cannot be ascertain at press time is said to have died from gunshot wounds on the way to the hospital, while the second victim, Odirin is presently battling for his life at the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara.

A source who spoke to Oasis Magazine (OM) under conditions of anonymity said that the two men were standing along Cementery by Ogodo road when gunmen in a Toyota Corolla drove by shooting at them before the car sped off.

Last week, a 29 year old young man, Joseph was killed while riding on a motorcycle along Yoruba road and barely a month ago, a vigilante member, Chukwudi was shot dead at the Urban area part of the town after gunmen confronted him in the midnight and chased him to where they finally cut his life short. His wife narrated how he got a call that night and was directed to where the men accosted him before snuffing life out of him.

Some persons have blamed the increase in crime on the absence of police from the mainstream of the town’s activities since the EndSARS protest ended weeks ago.

A police source who begged not to be quoted told OM that though the police has been a little laid back because of the protest, the main issue has been lack of cooperation from the community leaders whose wards are always involved in cultism and most times when caught, they prevent the police from bringing them.to book, “now the whole town is like a movie now, shooting everyday.”

The Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Hon Eugene Inoaghan was said to have reorganized the vigilante group, on Thursday, in an effort to make it more effective, but the police source said the issue of curbing cultism was beyond vigilante security.

“The police in terms of logistics is zero. The only vehicle the Orodje donated to us is the only one functioning while the Hilux Ugborhen community donated to us is in bad shape and we have made several appeals without success.”
