Adejobi Differentiates Stealing, Robbery, Armed Robbery

Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has explained the difference between stealing, robbery and armed robbery

According to a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), he said that “there is a need to know the differences between these criminal offences according to the Criminal Laws of Nigeria. Sec 383 of the Criminal Code, law of the FRN.”

Adejobi clarified that stealing is simply when someone fraudulently takes away an item capable of being stolen from another person, adding that although robbery is similar to it, in the case of robbery, there must be an exhibition of violence or threat to take away the item being stolen, or to retain it, just as he cited Sec 401 CC.

He continued: “In the case of armed robbery, there must be the use of firearms or offensive weapons to obtain such an item.”

He said: “One can see that they look similar, but the punishments vary. We can read sec 383 to 410 of the CC, and it will guide us. Some people slap to take away items from other people. If you are fond of doing that, do you know it’s robbery?

“If you have an object capable of creating fears or causing injuries to the person, that is armed robbery. These offences still have points to prove them, which are crucial to investigation and prosecution. So, be careful and be warned.”
