INEC Denies Chairman Operates X Account, Warns Against Fake Posts
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that its chairman is active on X (formerly Twitter), describing the allegation as false and misleading.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the commission said the reports alleging that the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, endorsed a partisan post on the platform were “entirely baseless” and a fabrication.
INEC stressed that its chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity, either privately or officially.
The commission described the viral post as a deliberate attempt to undermine the neutrality and integrity of its leadership at a time when it is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls.
It further revealed that cybercriminals have been exploiting fake social media accounts bearing the chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians, noting that several such accounts had previously been reported to security agencies.

INEC said it is working with relevant authorities and cyber-intelligence units to track down those behind the impersonation and misinformation campaign, warning that offenders would face prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act.
The commission urged the public to disregard the false claims and rely only on its verified communication channels for official information.
It reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections across the country.
