NUJ Delta Holds Maiden Congress, Lifts Coverage Ban On Police

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council has held her maiden Congress with the newly elected Executive members of the State Working Committee under the leadership of Comrade Michael Ikeogwu.

The Congress which held on Thursday at the permanent secretariat of the Union, had over a hundred journalists in attendance.

During the meeting, a by-election into the vacant office of the Financial Secretary was conducted and a former Chairman of Ughelli Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Polycarp Orosevwotu emerged winner through a unanimous vote after he was nominated by Comrade Andy Adaigbe and seconded by Comrade Paul Osuyi.

Equally, two key Committees were inaugurated – Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and Bye-Law Drafting Committee which were Chaired by Comrades Francis Nwabiani of the Pointer and Akpokona Omafuaire of the Vanguard respectively.

As a critical way forward decision by the SWC to partner public and private investors towards the development of the Union’s economy, two groups on Health Related Matters and Housing Development Agency were present to address the Union on possible ways of progressive partnerships.

The highpoint of the Congress was the selection of a syndicate group to come up with a Communique for the Congress. Consequent to this, the Congress unanimously endorsed the approval to lift the ban placed on media coverage of police activities over brutality.
